So we are back with some more podcasting Left 4 Deadness. This week we are breaking into a new style of doing Maps, we’re doing them video style. We found that doing reviews as purley audio was not really any good at truly justifying the map without playing it. So we decided that it was time that we moved into making this something for you to watch whilst eating your breakfast. Another good reason for this is that some people listen to the podcast just for the map and they usually don’t listen to the whole podcast because they cannot be bothered to wait for it.

Once again some things go bad with audio, there was some problems with North Surrey which was sent in my Korean Thug, there is some very strange but with Audacity that we cannot seem to fix and get the audio back for that. And we would also like to appologise to Airon who provided us with some help cleaning up the audio and went it came to actually attempting to sort it out we ran out of time to ask questions before being late with podcast releases. I will be sending a bunch of questions to him when i get a chance about sorting out the audio properly.

Right, Another Great Podcast! I am really enjoy these and they keep me awake on the way to uni on wednesday mornings! (2nd or 3rd time through)!
Oh YAY i am first comment!!
One small thing and that is a mis-pronounciation of Jannes – (Y-annes) – Just thought i would say since he may team kill me if i dont!
An you were a useful part of the team soul and nick (well nick not so much :D ) we should have some more Versus games they will be Epic! you havent experienced even a 1% of the -=UGC=- gameplay experience! oh and Teamspeak is apart of that experience Just ask Mr. Womby he knows what i mean ( there is “minor” foul language)
Well Congrats on another Great Podcast! Looking Foward to the next!

  2. ThornPhoeniX says:

Thanks Langford, we both have Teamspeak ready and set up for when we play again

  3. Langford says:

Well TeamSpeak is not only for when we play games together alot of us just come on to chat (really Friendly (unless me and Harley are in disagreement)), but i know being a student that the workload is horrendous but just keep in mind that i am almost always online and it is basically a second home for Mr. Wombat! so you will know us at least and the others are friendly – Just a little warning dont get on the wrong side of CandyCatVomit (She Bites) :D

  4. koreanthug says:

yay for skipping myself…I sound like shit :D

  5. unfortunatly we had to boost your audio and since we havent got volume editing very well yet it got a bit distorted. the tactic was good as was the delivery, you just need to talk a bit slower, but at least it was consitant in volume… eh nick….

  6. Langford says:

Constant Volume = LOL!!!! :D Yer if you cant tell i am bored and tired but not tired enough for sleep!!!

  7. ThornPhoeniX says:

Hey could those that enjoyed the video please rate it via youtube. And if you’ve played the campaign please comment, its got two comments and their saying how bad the campaign is

  8. Airon says:

Another sunday night, another great podcast. Great info on L4D2, thanks.

And, tumtetum, here’s a version that fixes the distortion a little and evens things out a bit. The speech is now centre mono too, which saves gobs of bandwidth and would get you a much better encoding quality too.

i think you’re expecting to much of youtube users and their capacity (or lacking of) to accept the fact that some people like things that they dont.

@ Airon: thanks a lot :D i hope that i can get the next podcast all smooth sounding and stuff :)

@everyone: oh yeah, did anyone hear any fireworks in the background?! all my neighbors started setting them off as soon as we put the podcast mic up… !!! its as if they know…

  10. THEY KNOW!!! RUN!!!

Sorry for the late reply, I did listen to it as soon as it came out but I downloaded it straight off the website via my Ipod and typing anything longer than a few lines is a bitch with the tiny touchkey things.

@KT: Though a little hard to hear, the tactic was a great summary of rushing and racing. Though actually I disagree with you on it being boring: I think it is one of the most challenging things you can do in l4d, provided the Director keeps up. The Director only struggles on a few maps like DA4, and on the rest rushing successfully requires either an expert team or a shocking enemy.

While I was listening I thought of an epic way to illustrate why I will rarely use melee weapons when playing seriously: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4DzcOCyHDqc&feature=player_embedded

You see, the problem is that if you need to use a melee weapon, something is probably going wrong. Though my experience is limited to the demo, it seems that the two main times people use them is in Crescendos and when being horded. Using them in crescendos as a main weapon is foolish in my opinion. This is because that as you attack a zombie, there is a slight delay between when you slash and when the zombie in front is dead and you are free to move. This means that you have to stop for about half a second every time you slash a zombie in front of you since you simply run into them. Using them as a backup is fine though, but only if you have no choice. And as for when you are being leghumpd by a horde: you shouldn’t get leghumped by a horde. If you do, then something is going wrong that should be sorted – melee weapons just limit the damage.

Btw the chainsaw has a limited fuel supply shown next to its icon on the HUD as a white bar. I spotted it in one of the gameplay videos.

This podcast was excellent, and I think the reason was that you managed to get a great balance between summing up what we knew/telling us info and then extrapolating on that and giving interesting insights into the game.
Oh I forgot: The screen capture quality on the review was great. What did you use to record it? Any console commands used to spectate?
I also forgot to mention: They added a default key for last weapon used: Q. I love being able to empty my gun in the running crescendo then switch to double pistols and keep on running! I’m kicking myself for not thinking to set it in l4d1 (the option was there, it was just blank by default.
Me again :) . Putting part of the podcast out on YouTube is a great way to reach a bigger audience: the vid has 5 times as many downloads as the podcast.
I think I’m done for now :)

  11. koreanthug says:

trust me…I’ve done it enough…if your good at it…you can clear a section in a small handful of minutes…it’s pretty uneventful and boring especially if the enemy team isn’t able to do something big…

I can think of countless times of rushing where you can barely get a team to yellow because you just can’t do enough damage to 3-4 guys sticking together and zerg rushing the place…regardless of the skill on your team…but really it depends on the skill of the rusher that determines the success of it

  12. the indiana jones thing… awesome visual aid, may have to use that in a future video :) (will credit you of course)
Oh I forgot: The screen capture quality on the review was great. What did you use to record it? Any console commands used to spectate?
for the recording, i first recorded a Demo of me and Nick playing, then used FRAPs to finesh off the job (it was in my budget to buy, so i thought “what the hell!”) the sound quality of the recording is nothing amazing, but thats because of my crappy sound card, otherwise i was quite pleased with my purchase.
and for the spectate…. i was dead. the steam pipe killed me so i went in free look and had a look around. i got rid of the HUD during the demo playback (i forgot to put it back up for a few of the clips)

we’re glad people are watching in, i’m just pissed off because people are actualy suprised we have a difrent opinon than them about the map (which THEY hated) and comment only to say how crap the campain is insted of commenting on the points made in the actual review…
but i guess thats asking too much from the average youtube user.

i need to put a question out to the comunity about our map review. if you watched it, what did you think of the more “to the point delivery” insted of the more chatty nature of the podcast?

what difficulty would you generaly rush in? advanced or expert?

  13. Um, I don’t think either of us are talking about campaign. Rushing is really a versus tactic. At least I think so, he said “enemy team”
I think the trick is to get a balance. Get the message across and don’t waffle but liven it up a bit with some banter. As kt said, disagree more!

  14.
Um, I don’t think either of us are talking about campaign. Rushing is really a versus tactic. At least I think so, he said “enemy team”
oh right, i thought it was for both. i always like to see how fast i can get thru a campain in advanced… nick didnt like it because he said something like he wanted to savor the zombie killing or something… anyway….

we just have to figure out the best way to dissagree but still keep it short. generly we both have the same taste in maps… but i dont mind purpusfuly aposing him… see nicks pretty scrawny… i could take him.

  15. ThornPhoeniX says:

Indeed, i hate rushing in Co-op. It’s fine in Versus as its more of a kind of tactic to out do the enemy infected but in co-op its just like who are you racing against? Just the AI Director? Wop de do, you don’t get points for being their faster. I enjoy the atmosphere of Co-op and how it can get tense, you cannot savour that when you rush, it makes Left 4 Dead seem more like a game than an experience of tenseness.

Which is fine for Versus but boring for co-op. I like the fear when playing advanced/ expert. Makes it more enjoyable and less like your doing it just for something to do, when you savour it its more like your actually there to have some fun and get engrossed in l4d.

  16. I guess it is kind of for both, but there’s no point in campaign unless you are trying to get Nothing Special or something. I’d say the point of rushing is to move fast enough that the special infected get less chances to attack and far less time to set up. Every 45 seconds or so you should get attacked by the enemy team, so the faster you can go through the map the safer you are. And the main danger isn’t how man attacks they get in but how long they get to plan. A well planned attack can end a game in a matter of seconds, with no warning and no defence. Versus is a bit like American football: A perfect attack beats a perfect defense. All you can do as survivors is make it as hard as possible for them to execute such an attack.
