the third and final part of my essay. if you haven't read the first parts, here are the links: part 1. part 2.

Chapter 3: Becoming a Culture

In the final stages of presenting a story within the outer world promotions, many cultural references had already become established within the community, particularly from the game play itself.

With the painterly style of Team Fortress 2 came the ability to be more creative with realism and this translated from the creation of the game into the actual game play where creativity is encouraged. Unlike most games where the environment becomes more difficult with each level to continually challenge the player as they get better, Team Fortress 2 has no form of difficulty progression. Instead the environments are designed to allow for the creativity of more experienced players yet doesn’t slow down newer ones. Also the fact that players don’t “level up” elevated the need for them to be more creative and find tactical ways to become stronger in the game. This has lead to an almost martial art style of play for each of the individual characters, where effective moves and tactics are learned, perfected and utilised. Of course, with every martial art comes etiquette and this was no exception, however being mostly unwritten, only the basic etiquette of making sure you don’t do anything unhelpful to your team is understood. Naturally there are some controversies behind using certain weapons or classes because they’re mostly associated with newer players or are apparently easier to use, but that is usually down to personal embellishment of the basic etiquette. These ideas are usually spread on fan sites, particularly on the website known as “uber charged” because of its popularity and more professional approach to team fortress 2 specific articles. These sort of sociological dynamics are present within most online games of any genre but the painterly nature of team fortress’ graphics aided the capabilities of weaponry and dynamic environmental features in not being tied down by the constraints of reality. This gives more freedom for the abilities of the player and their weapon, allowing more diverse tactics to be formed than in most other games. Along with these tactics comes people discussing the superiority of them and valuing another player’s skill and respectability based on the difficulty of the manoeuvres they can accomplish in game.

In game creativity and cultural etiquette weren’t the only things the community contributed to the outer development of the world of Team Fortress. More creative uses of the game brought it back into the fun and light hearted territory. One particular piece of fan created media that comes to mind would be the community acclaimed “Ignis Solus” by Lit fuse studios, which is a short film about the Pyro and his lonely day within the map “2fort”. It doesn’t really tell the story of the game but it characterised the Pyro in a number of different dimensions without a “meet the Pyro” video for reference and also takes cinematic advantage of the impressionistic environment. Although it conveys a simplistic story, it captures the sense of loneliness and makes you feel as though the game is running in a world parallel to our own.

Saxton Hale and Mann Co were used to acknowledge one fan by the name of Diogo Lima who created the convincing guard dog update prank, fooling thousands of fans. His creativity was rewarded in the same way as the fan who sent off the scout update coupon, with an impersonal corporate letter from the fictitious weapon supplier who played along with the prank.

Later, in the previously mentioned war update, the community was further encouraged to be creative outside the game with the announcement of the propaganda contest. The brief was to put together a propaganda poster to encourage your favourite class out of the Demoman or the soldier to win the war against the other. This further immersed players into the war where they argued about who should win to the point where it might as well have been real.

Conclusion

When the new style of Team Fortress 2 was first established, the quality of fun and dynamics within the game play had rapidly increased with its development. Thanks to the graphical style, the game achieved a level of cartoon realism that allowed developers to incorporate more fun environment without being tethered by the full constraints of reality. However, not only were the dynamics of the game improved, so was the means for telling the story which later encouraged players to interact with the characters outside of the game. This outer world incentive mainly stems from the creation of the Fictitious company Mann Co and the characterisation of its CEO, and because of this a sub-culture was established where players played along with the idea that Mann Co, the game characters and the game world is actually real. From this point fans didn’t just play the game, they lived it.

Overall, 20th century commercial design is what improved the playability of the game and the relationship between the players and the characters. Furthermore it has inspired and encouraged gamers to be creative not just inside the game, but outside through their own fan art, films and websites. Without its style, Team Fortress 2 would be just another game.

Thanks for reading.

First, a little introduction to those of you who have never heard of eve.

Eve is an mmo created by an Icelandic company called CCP. It is set in the very far future in another part of the galaxy. The backstory is that colonists from our local constellation discovered a wormhole leading to the other side of the galaxy. Colonies were set up and fed through the wormhole. But one day, for an unknown reason, the wormhole collapsed, cutting these colonies off from earth. In the hundreds and thousands of years that followed, they fought over the few remaining supplies and then reverted to farming and similar methods to survive. As such, they lost all high-tec technological capability, including space flight. Many more hundreds of years passed and the word "earth" was totally forgotten, with the relics hanging in the sky created by the "ancients". Eventually, one by one, each colony rediscovered spaceflight, some faster than others. Eventually, they formed four empires - the gallente, the caldari, the amarr and the minmatar. Each has very distinct differences in the technology the use due to them developing individually, though they are all human.

Now, the bit you care about: the gameplay.

EVE is very unlike other mmo's (read: wow). The learning curve is more of a cliff. It is a sandbox game (with some exceptions). Almost every item in the game is manufactured by players out of ore mined by other players into ships, equipment, starbases and a plethora of other things that yet more players use to control and defend territory from, you guessed it, other players.

Eve is effectively a game of two parts, high and low security (sec). High sec is policed by extremely powerful npc's who don't stop you from attacking other players, but make certain that you will get blown up in the attempt. They provide consequences. Highsec is therefore more or less safe.

In lowsec (about 70% of the map) there are no police. Players rule this area as massive alliances (who in turn tend to become power blocs, just like in rl
- east and west, etc). Each alliance can have thousands and even tens of thousands of players, and are made up of successively smaller alliances who in turn are made of individual corporations to which each player belongs.

In my next post I'll explain where I come in.

I'm the mining director of an industrial Corp with about 50 players. We mine ore together, use it to manufacture finished goods then sell these goods. We then give the profit back to the members. My job is to more or less run the day to day practical activities of the corp. I am also a (I like to think) capable fleet commander. I run mining operations in dangerous and sometimes hostile (controlled by another alliance who shoot on sight) territory in order to get the rare ore that we need to manufacture with. It's a tough job but I have become quite experienced at it and know how to minimize risk while getting as much ore as possible.

For the first time PAX is coming to the east coast United States, and it happens to be a little more than an hour away. For those who don't know, PAX is one of the largest video game conventions in the United States. Back in late 2009 I was pumped for this event but I somehow forgot. It is now about a month away and due to a combination of fortune and misfortune, I'm going. When I remembered it was too late and the weekend passes and Saturday passes were all out, and I cannot go that Friday, but luckily since Sunday was still selling tickets and it's happening on the week of my birthday. So in the end, I am going there on Sunday March 28, 2010. I intend to post my misadventures of the day, whenever that arrives, and with permission as a portal page. I thought that I should give everyone a heads up, and HURRAY FOR PAX EAST!

Since episode 1 of the L4D podcast, me and Nick have been producing episodes mainly for our own amusement. It started of as an experiment and we didn't expect to actually get listeners. Unfortunately, because people did start to listen and join in the community, it makes it so much harder stop. But, I can honestly say that the last episode we recorded with Stoned Wombat, Korean Thug and Langford was the most fun we have had recording a podcast for a long time because I actually felt like we got something out of it... even if it wasn't more listeners lol. But, the rest of the time, it feels like a chore.

Which is what this boils down to, the podcast is no longer any fun to record, and this is not good. How can you enjoy a podcast that we don't enjoy making? Let's be honest, it's not the best podcast in the world is it? And there's not much that we can to improve on it, because the only reason we made it a podcast is because microphones are cheap and any monkey with one can make a podcast. We've learnt a lot from what we've done but doing nothing but audio is not very stimulating to us anymore. So although we've decided to end the podcast it's not the end of the Survivors Diary, but the beginning of something new and hopefully more enjoyable than the depressing dystopian zombie apocalypse as we venture into more colourful and varied worlds!

Virtually Reality is our next experiment, it's not a podcast... okay, it's sort of a podcast, but not really... It's like a video gameplay podcast where we explore games co-operatively rather than just review them or randomly talk about them. As well as that we'll be releasing more general game related articles based on our own gaming experiences and interests, and because I am too lazy to write articles most of the time I'll be doing lone videos instead, along similar lines to the co-operative podcasts. Meaning a hell-ov-a-lot more releases for you guys to enjoy, and if you guys don't enjoy it, well we're going to be opening up a forum section for you to write or record your own. But also the actual main podcast isn't always going to be just us two, guests will also be welcome to join in some of our games.

So just to clarify, in exchange for our once every 2 week L4D podcast, this is what we hope to get Virtually Reality up to once the podcast is over:

- weekly co-op game play video podcasts that will sometimes be open for our community to join in on.

- single game podcasts (releases depend on the game, but mostly weekly)

- single game articles about our gaming experience (weekly from both of us). this will include console games from me, so it wont just PC platform.

- Occasional general gaming articles about stuff like art work.

- Open forum section to share your own gaming adventures.

for now, we're going to continue Recording the podcast until the 12th of April (4 podcasts from now) so we can finish off our planned shows and not end so abruptly. these podcasts will be open for people to join in on. as for the quarantine, we're going to try and carry that on after the podcast but include community maps from other games.

We'd like to thank everyone in our community and the UGC, and as a thank you, we'd like to invite everybody into the final podcast episode (recording on the 9th -11th of April) , where we will have no limit on who can be joining us for recording.. sure this may become a cluster f*** but its the last episode... so we dont give a F*** as long as we have fun. We'd especially like to thank Airon for cleaning up our audio, we never learnt but we're very grateful.

but, like we said, this isnt the end and we hope you all stick around to play a bigger variety of games with us for virtually Reality.
